The Mushin Customary Court in Lagos last Thursday dissolved the nine-year-old marriage between a herbalist, Segun Fahuwa, and his retired banker wife Blessing, on grounds of incompatibility.

The Court President, Dr Abayomi Ipaye, said Fahuwa had on Feb. 8,20 10 instituted the suit and insisted on the dissolution of the marriage while the wife wanted the marriage sustained.

Ipaye said the respondent later consented to the dissolution after her husband abandoned their matrimonial home to fulfill his wish.

“The marriage had broken down irretrievably as the respondent had consented to the dissolution and all the judge’s efforts to reconcile them proved abortive,” Ipaye said.

The president granted the estranged couple a free divorce, saying they were free to go on their separate ways without any molestation from either party.

Fahuwa, 55, had told the court to end the marriage between him and Blessing, 52, citing “incompatibilities in all departments of marriage”.

He accused his wife of threatening his life and provoking him any time they had little misunderstanding.

He told the court that his wife was also disrespectful to him as the head of the family. “I packed out of the matrimonial home since Feb. 8 this year as a result of my wife’s quarrelsome attitude,” Fahuwa said.

He pleaded with the court to grant him the custody of the only child of the marriage, aged nine. Blessing, who told the court that she stood by her husband when he had nothing, said she had accepted the matter as her destiny.
