Boxers Move To Benin Camp For Commonwealth Games
The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) moved to Benin yesterday to begin camping in preparation for the Commonwealth games.
NBF president, Rotimi George-Taylor, said this on Saturday in Lagos while speaking with newsmen at the end of the trials for the October 3 to 14 games in India George-Taylor, who said the boxers would move to camp at Etete, Benin City, noted that there was little time left for the New Delhi Games.
The boxing chief said he was impressed with the performance of the boxers who were invited to the trails based on their outings during last year’s National Open and National sports Festival.
Asked if the NBF would organised training tour for the boxers before October, George-Taylor said it was part of the federation’s plans.
Super heavyweight fighter, Whwariere Onoriede, who beat Sarafa Salami in the +91kg category, said that he was happy he won his fight.
Onoriede attributed his victory to hard work, adding that the trials afforded him the opportunity to exhibit his skills.
Waheed Shogbamu, winner of the 60kg category at the expense of Rasheed Lawal, said his participation in the Youth Olympics trials in Baku, Azerbaijan, early this month, was of immense benefit.
Ayo Michael developed stage fright as he withdrew from his 81kg bout with Muftau Kakawa while Agbaje Taiwo beat Okerinde Semiu in the 56kg category.
NBF secretary Patrick Uwagbale said the boxers invited to camp were selected based on their performance.
