Mr . Paul Arinze, an alumnus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has donated a 30 KV sound proof generator to the Department of Mass Communication.

Arinze, the General Manager, Policy and Corporate Affairs, British Oil and Gas Nig. announced the donation in Nsukka, when he paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bartho Okolo.

He said that the gesture was his own little way of giving back to the university that endowed him with knowledge and made him what he had become.

“UNN did much for me in preparing me for the task ahead and this is my little way of appreciating the university,” he said.

He said that he was contacting other past students of the department, especially the 1998 graduates, to ensure that the department that had produce giants in various spheres of life, was given a facelift.

In his remarks, Mr. Emma Esina, also a graduate of Mass Communication and National Group Communication manager of Fidelity Bank PlC, said that he and Arinze had concluded arrangements to send 100 modern text books to enrich the department’s library.

“We will also later find out from the management, status of some of the university’s ongoing projects, to know where we will assist”, he said.

Esina further disclosed that they would institute two awards, one for the department and one for the university, after consultations with management on the issue.

Okolo, who commended the donors, said he was happy that; “you remembered the institution that prepared you intellectually and morally for the task ahead,” he said.

The VC said that the university was currently partnering with some communication giants such as Goggle International and MTN to project activities of the university to the world.

“UNN was not among 10 best universities in the recent National Universities Commission ranking because of inadequate communication tools to project activities of this university to the world,” he said

Speaking earlier, The Head of Department, Mass Communication, Dr Church Akpan, commended Arinze and Esina for their kind gestures.

He said: “this generator is given to the department when it seriously needs it, as it will power the new mass communication studio that has been digitalised”.

“We will ensure its adequate maintenance; so that it will serve the purpose for which it was given”.

Highlights of the occasion was the inauguration of the generator by the VC and also a motivational talk by Arinze to the students of the department.
