AFOSU Ministers Common Support For African Teams
Rafiu Ladipo, President of the African Football and Other Sports Supporters Union (AFOSU), has said that there would be common support for African countries at the South Africa 2010 World Cup.
Ladipo, told newsmen in Lagos at the weekend that AFOSU took the decision to have a common support base to give massive support to African team playing against other national teams.
“AFOSU took the decision to have common support base to six African countries taking part in the 2010 World Cup.
“This is to ensure a minimum of at least one Africa country getting to final of the world cup,’’ Ladipo said.
He said the idea of common support for the African countries at the World Cup in South Africa gave birth to the “Victory Africa Campaign” that commenced in Togo on May 16.
“We launched the campaign in Togo last week to put pressure on CAF to lift the ban on Togo’s national team, and we are happy that CAF responded positively.
“Nigeria is the first country from where the campaign will go to Cote d’ Ivoire, then Ghana, Cameroon, Algeria and South Africa,’’ Ladipo said.
He said that common Africa support will compliment Africa Union’s effort in uniting the continent and promote peace among the all the nations in the continent.
Ejike Asiegbu, Coordinator of the campaign, said that though the mundial was taking place in South Africa, it is a Pan Africa affair.
“The objective of the Victory Africa Campaign is to mobilise and harmonise a united Africa Support base to jointly support the African teams.
Asiegbu said that as part of the measures to get massive support, AFOSU mandated her members to nominate patrons and ambassadors.
“President Goodluck Jonathan, as well as his counterparts in Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire, Cameroon, Algeria and South Africa are patrons,’’ Asiegbu said.
