More than 2,500 members of different political parties  have formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Nzam, Anyamelu Local Government Area of Anambra.

Addressing the defectors at Nzam, Governor Peter Obi described APGA as the only party that was committed to championing the people’s cause.

He stressed that the party’s membership was open to everyone who had the welfare of “Ndigbo” at heart.

The governor said that his administration had recorded some achievements in the area, particularly in the areas of roads’ construction, health, education and agriculture.

Obi urged the new party members to strive to promote the interests of APGA, urging the people in the area to shift their focus from issues regarding the February 6 governorship election in the state to how to foster the area’s development.

Also speaking, Dr. Tim Menakaya, a member of APGA’s Board of Trustees, described the decision of the people to defect to APGA as reasonable and timely.

He assured the new party members that they would receive the same privileges which the old party members were enjoying.

Earlier, Mr. Emma Nakwudo, the APGA Chairman in the area, said that the people of the area had resolved to promote positive values, while eschewing acts capable of disrupting the good programmes and policies of the state government.

Leaders of the decampees, Messrs Boniface Okoye (PDP), Joseph Madubuko (ADP), Peter Uche (PPA), Boniface Chubike (AC) and Chinedu Odiofo (ADP), said that their defection was induced by the achievements of  Obi in the neighbourhood.
