2011 Election: NLC Threaten Strike, If…
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the full implementation of the Justice Uwais report on electoral reform.
The NLC President, Abdulwaheed Omar, said, workers will embark on strike if Maurice Iwu is re-appointed as INEC Chairman when his tenure expires in June.
Omar led thousands of demonstrators, mainly from the affiliate unions of NLC, Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Civil Society groups to the streets of Abuja.
It would be recalled that following discrepancies noticed in the 2007 election across the country, which had culminated in several suites and removal of elected persons, the core of the blame had been on Iwu.
Consequently, political pundits have started looking at an INEC without Iwu when his tenure expires in June.
While majority seem to see a better INEC without Iwu, a few still believes that the estranged INEC boss should be allowed to pilot its affairs in 2011.
Meanwhile, the save Democracy Group, a Civil Rights body, last week staged a protest saying that Iwu lacked the credibility to pilot INEC’s affairs in the 2011 elections.
