Lack of accountability has remained the bane of leadership in Nigeria, according to an Islamic movement.

Alhaji Mustafa Oshodi, National President of the Aswar-Ul Islam Movement of Nigeria, said this in Lagos at the weekend.

Speaking at the 94th annual conference of the movement in Ikorodu, Lagos, the cleric said the country lacked good leaders particularly at the grassroots.

“We have been having a lot of problems including mismanagement of the country’s resources. This speaks volume about Nigeria.

“There is an urgent need for accountability by leaders at all levels; they have to be accountable.

“In Nigeria today, accountability is not yet at an acceptable level and so we need to improve on it,’’ Oshodi said.

The Tide source reports that the cleric spoke on the topic, “Leadership and Accountability: Panacea for Good Governance”.

“If everybody is accountable, Nigeria will not have the problems it is having now.

“And if I am doing something and I know that I will be called to account for my actions one day, I will be more careful in managing the people’s funds,” he added.

Reflecting on the recent happenings in the North, Oshodi said there was no link between Islam and violence, stressing that the religion had always preached peace.

“Islam does not preach violence,’’ he stressed.
