Teachers Want Rivers Govt To Implement TSS

Teachers in the employ of Rivers State last Friday called on the government to implement the new teachers’ salary scale.

The Chairman of the state Council of Nigeria Union of Teachers  (NUT), Chief Moses Adiela, made the call in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt.

Adiela said that the implementation of the new salary structure for teachers by the state government would not impact negatively on its revenue. He said that by implementing the new scale, the difference between the old and the new salaries would not be too much.

The NUT chief said that Gov Chibuike Amaechi was allegedly misinformed as he was told that teachers were taking several special allowances in addition to their pay.  Adiela explained that all the allowances paid to teachers in the state were also paid to civil servants, adding that there was no other special allowance for the teachers.

“The only special allowance we agreed with the Governors’ Forum is the 27.5 per cent of our basic salary since 2008, which the state government has refused to implement for us,” he said.

The chairman said that the National Executive Council of NUT had directed that teachers in any state that refused to implement the Teacher’s Salary Scale should embark on indefinite strike.

“We have also conveyed the decision of NEC to the government since February, but since strike is not good for both the government and us, we may be compelled to take a drastic measure any moment from now, ” Adiela said
