Students Demonstrate Over Bomb Scare In Plateau Poly
Students of Plateau State Polytechnic, Jos Campus, staged a demonstration which turned violent on Friday over the presence of a lunatic suspected to be carrying a bomb.
Our correspondent gathered that security men apprehended the man at about 9.00 a.m. following suspicions about his appearance.
The security men were said to have interrogated the suspect and detained him with the intention of handing him over to the Joint Military Patrol Team in the state.
It was learnt that soldiers took him away, but this did not go down well with the students who wanted the man dealt with in the open.
Our reporter gathered that the students, in anger, barricaded the highway in front of their campus, thereby causing a traffic snarl.
In the melee that ensued, the students started throwing missiles at on-coming vehicles as well as the personnel of the joint patrol team that took away the suspect.
A lecturer in the institution, Mr Danasabe Chuwang, told NAN that the campus security personnel handed over the suspect to the soldiers to prevent the students from taking the laws into their hands.
Chuwang said if the students had their way, the suspect might have been killed, given the prevailing situation in the state.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Anglo Jos Police Station, Supt. John Emega, told NAN that the suspect, Sunday Ebo, was now in the state headquarters of the command.
Emega also displayed the contents of the cellophane bag Ebo was carrying, which contained spoilt cellular phones/ear pieces, some naira notes and gari.
He also said that 20 students of the institution were arrested in connection with the barricade and would be taken to the command.
The DPO said three vehicles, which included two buses and a Jetta saloon car, were vandalised while two people sustained injuries.
Meanwhile, the campus has been sealed off by armed policemen and soldiers.
