The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the death of a suspected notorious kidnapper and armed robber, Gift Onwugbuta.

The command’s spokeswoman, Mrs Rita Innoma-Abbey, said in Port Harcourt, yesterday, that the suspect and one Opurum Anaele had been on the wanted list since November.

Abbey said that the notorious Onwugbuta hailed from Omuma in Etche local government of the state.

She said the two men went into hiding when the police declared them wanted and later resurfaced to continue kidnapping.

Abbey said the police apprehended them and were being taken to their hideout on Friday for arms recovery when some people suspected to be members of their gang opened fire on the police.

‘’In the ensuing gun battle, the suspects received gunshot wounds and died on the way to the hospital while other members of their gang escaped. Efforts are on to arrest them and recover the weapons,’’ She said.

The police image maker also said that a middle aged man from Ekeremor in Bayelsa was arrested on Friday on the East-West road in Port Harcourt.

She said the suspect, who was a passenger in a bus, had two locally made double barrel short pistols and that he claimed to have bought the guns from Aba in Abia to supply to a man in Bayelsa.
