NDLEA Destroys 1,225kg Of Drugs In Bauchi
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Friday in Bauchi destroyed 1,225 kilogrammes of drugs as part of the efforts to check drug trafficking and abuse.
The Agency Chairman, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade, said at the event that more than 462 people were arrested and prosecuted in connection with various drug related offences in the last three years in the state.
Giade made the disclosure in Bauchi at the destruction of 1,187.73 kilogrammes of Indian hemp and 37.27 kilogrammes of psychotropic substances.
He said that hundreds of drug consignments were seized from various traffickers’ in their hideout across the state.
The chairman said that 133 persons were convicted by the Federal High Courts in Jos and Bauchi while 52 cases were pending before the courts.
“The state command recently arrested a recalcitrant drug dealer identify as Garba Yaro.
‘’He was found to be dealing in Indian hemp after being previously apprehended twice and charged to court but was released on bail.
“I strongly believe that the determination to address the drug problem must start at the family level,” he said.
Giade said the Agency had encouraged the establishment of drug free clubs in secondary schools and tertiary institutions to sensitise youths to the dangers of drug abuse.
In his remark, the Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Babayo Gamawa, emphasised the state government’s commitment to check the menace and build a drug free society.
Gamawa said that the state government would construct access road to the Agency’s office in the metropolis and provide it with vehicles to enhance its operations.
