Gov Chime Charges Female Engineers On Excellence
The Governor of Enugu State, Mr. Sullivan Chime has urged Professional Women Engineers in the country to continue to add value to the practice of engineering by excelling in the performance of their jobs.
Governor Chime was speaking when he received, members of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, Enugu State Chapter at the Government House, Emigi.
The Governor, who was represented by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo, noted with delight that any profession which the women ventured into, they do so with passion, dedication and high sense of duty.
The state Chief Executive described as heart-warming the fact that a good number of women are now professional engineers, a profession thought to be an exclusive for men
He, therefore, charged members of the association to redouble efforts in the development of the profession and also encourage more women to take to the profession.
The governor thanked the association for appreciating his government’s contribution to the development of the state in the areas of infrastructural development, such as health, education, water supply and transport, among others and assured that their request would be given adequate attention.
He described as commendable the association’s choice projects of the production of Biogas as cooking gas pet project, which will involve technical skills training for youths.
Earlier in her address, the state chairman of the association, Mrs. Uchenwa Ujam said the body was formed some twenty-eight years ago as a pressure group, to make the public and stakeholders in the engineering sector accord as much recognition to the female colleagues as their male counterparts. Mrs. Ujam also said they use the forum to encourage, mentor and assist one another to achieve greater heights in the practice of engineering profession and also encourage engineering studies and practice among women.
According to the Chairman, their Mission includes to stimulate women to achieve professional excellence as engineers and leaders and also expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life.
She explained that they have their members in all branches of the engineering profession, adding that through the profession, they have proved that women can match their male counterpart in the practice of the profession and also perform their duties as mothers and wives in the home.
Mrs. Ujam said that their pet project of skills training for youths, when completed, would train crafts men and technicians, groups of the engineering family in areas of plumbing, carpentry, masonry and mechanics.
She commended the Governor for the numerous road projects executed in the state, programme to reduce unemployment, improved transport system, street lightening and the on-going refurbishment of facilities at the State Radio and Television Station, and appealed to him to provide them with office accommodation and an 18 seater bus.
