European Union Backs Jonathan …Welcome Yar’Adua’s Return

The European Union, EU, has thrown its weight behind efforts by the Acting President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan to keep the ship of the state afloat.

In a statement yesterday the EU representative on foreign affairs and security policy, Mrs Catherine Hackson said the union encourages the effort by the acting president of Nigeria to foster stability.

Mrs Hackson who is also the union vice president of European Commission said the union acknowledge the challenge posed by the uncertainty in the political process in Nigeria at the present time and commended the will of the democratic institution in the country in remaining faithful to the principles of democracy, good governance and the rule of law.

The EU in the statement encouraged the efforts of the acting president, Dr Jonathan and the government of Nigerian to foster stability in the country and sub-region.

The EU also underlines its support to the government of Nigeria to ensure the continuity of democracy and to tackle the many challenges that faces the nation.

The statement further acknowledges the effort of the acting president to foster stability in the country and pledged to support the effort by Nigerians to deepen democracy.

The EU used the opportunity to welcome the news of the return of the president, Musa Yar’Adua to the country, adding that it extends its best wishes to the president and his family and continues to hope that he would soon recover completely from his sickness.
