The National Union of Ikwerre Students (NUIS) has called on the chairman of the four Local Government Councils in the Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality of Rivers State to consider its members in their welfare programmes to enhance academic excellence.

The National President of the Association Comrade Omereji Chinedu David who made the call shortly after a stakeholders meeting of the body in Port Harcourt penultimate Friday decried the seeming neglect of some of the council bosses to the students’ welfare since they came into office.

He claimed that the chairmen are performing below expectation on welfare of the students, adding that “instead of receiving financial and other welfare packages from the chairmen, we are left to suffer in the midst of plenty”. He also disclosed that the chairmen refused to honour their requests for courtesy visits, stressing that one of them was yet to fulfill his promise to the union.

The students enumerated some of their problems that require urgent attention which include lack of a secretariat and a bus to ease their transport problems.  He said the students are not asking too much as the councils are financially capable of solving these requests if they are willing to do so. He therefore appealed to them to look into the plight of the students.

The student body lauded the leadership of Ikwerre Youth Movement (IYM) and urged them to ignore distractive criticisms and remain focused to their responsibilities. The students expressed satisfaction with the activities of the chief (Hon) Andrew Uchendu’s led National Forum and urged other eminent sons and daughters of Ikwerre clan to emulate the forum.

Comrade Emereji expressed the students heartfelt condolence to the families of the departed founding fathers of Ikwerre nation namely: Eze E.J.A Oriji, Chief Emmanuel Aguma and Amb (Chief) Ignatius Ajuru and prayed God to give their families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

The body also urged Rivers people to support the Rt. (Hon) Chibuike Amaechi’s government in the state.
