Akwa Ibom Government has received 1.74 million insecticide treated nets from the Federal Government Roll-Back Malaria Project for distribution to the people.

Dr Godfry Akro, the State Roll-Back Malaria Programme Manager, who disclosed this recently   at a news conference in Uyo, while briefing newsmen on the State Malaria Booster Programme, said the distribution would begin next month.

Akro, who was represented by the Health Education Officer in the State Ministry of Health, Mrs Margaret Okpon, said that the State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, was expected to flag off the exercise on March 10, in Uyo.

He said that the local council chairmen were expected to flag off the exercise in their respective headquarters the following day.

The Programme Manager said that the house-to-house distribution of the insecticide nets expected to commence on March 11 would focus mainly on families.

“Bachelors or spinsters are not entitled to these nets, single parents are however going to be considered,” Akro said, adding that each household was entitled to two nets.

“It is going to be a four-day distribution exercise, spanning March 11 to March 14,’’ he said.

Akro said that the exercise was collaboration between the Federal Government and the State Government with the support from the World Bank.

Dr Tony Ahon, a member of the state support team from the Federal Ministry of Health, advised the citizens not to fix the nets to their doors or windows.
