Thunderstorm Kills 9 In Andoni …4 Bodies Recovered, Many Homeless

About nine persons have been reportedly killed by thunderstorm which occurred last Sunday in the Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Sources from the area informed The Tide that apart from the death of the nine persons, the storm also rendered many people homeless as buildings were  de-roofed, while some economic trees were uprooted.

The Tide also learnt that majority of those who died in the incident were women who were returning home after fishing along the Andoni river.

As at the time of filing this report, bodies of four of the nine victims had been recovered and deposited at  Otaije mortuary, Inyong Oron Asarama.

Communities worst affected by the incident, include Ngo, Asarama, Unyeada, and Akaradi.

Others are Ebukum, Okoloile and Oyorokoto.

Speaking in an interview with newsmen, a community leader, Mr Ikpoko Adasi described the incident as the worst of its kind in recent times.

Mr Adasi said that the magnitude of destruction caused by the storm had shown that Andoni, and indeed the entire Niger Delta were vulnerable to natural disasters.

Also speaking, Mr Ebenezer Hebron from Unyeada called for relief materials for victims of the disaster.

The chairperson of Andoni Local Government Area, Emilia Nte could not be  reached on phone, but an aide who spoke under condition of anonymity said that the council would soon take steps to ameliorate the sufferings of the victims.
