Over 200 patent medicine shops operating in Cross River State have been shut down for selling fake drugs.
National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NADFAC) in Calabar says the shops were shut during its pharamco-vigilance survey which took it to all the local government areas of the state.
Deputy Coordinator of the Agency in the State, Abdulkarim Razaq who stood in for the substantive Co-ordinator, said in his office that the campaign against fake and adulterated drugs would continue as long as patent drug dealers did not discontinue in the nefarious trade of selling fake drugs.
The coordinator who said the officials were being trained on the use of the “true scan” machine for testing the efficacy or otherwise of drugs, expressed optimism that the machines would aid the campaign against fake drugs in the country.
He also announced that the agency would soon commence a public enlightenment programme to educate the people on the dangers of self medication and the issue of drug counterfeiting among others.
He, therefore, advised Nigerians to always seek medical advice and prescriptions from experts to guard against abuse.
On the allegation that there was adulterated flour in markets in Cros River State, he said the allegation was baseless as bakers never complained of such adulteration.
He applauded the effort of the Director General for his proactive approach to the campaign against drug and food adulteration.
