Gov Peter Obi Wins Anambra Polls …VP Congratulates Obi
Peter Obi, the gubernatorial candidate for the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) has emerged winner in last Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State.
The Anambra State resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Josiah Uwazuruonye who announced the election result yesterday in Awka, the Anambra State capital said the APGA candidate emerged winner with a total vote of 97,843.
Mr Obi was trailed closely by Dr Chris Ngige, the Action Congress candidate who polled 60,240 votes while candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo had 59,355 votes.
Declaring the APGA candidate winner, the Resident Electoral Commissioner said ‘Peter Obi of All Progressive Grand Alliance, having satisfied the requirements of the law scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner”.
Accepting the election result, Mr Obi asked for the support of his opponents in the developmental of the state.
He thanked the people of Anambra State for the support given to him, adding that by voting him back into office for a second term, the Anambra people have expressed their support for effort of his administration in addressing the developmental challenges in the state, and promised that his administration will even do more at the second term to better the state.
He commended candidates of other parties for their patriotism and desire to serve the state and enjoined them to support in his effort toward developing the state for the betterment of all Anambra people, and thanked INEC for a job well-done.
By this victory, Obi becomes the first in the history of Anambra State to be voted into the office of governor for a second term.
Meanwhile Vice President Dr Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated Mr Peter Obi and the good people of Anambra State for the peaceful conduct of the election.
Dr Jonathan said the success recorded in the elections shows that Nigerians are truly determined to make democracy succeed.
He acknowledged the role played by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),the Nigeria Police and other security agencies in the conduct of the successful election, and commended the contestants for the exemplary conduct. The Vice president remarked that the exercise showed that Nigeria could get out of the woods in terms of election and politics.
