Amaechi Breaks Ground For Building Of New UST
Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, has performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the commencement of construction work on the new campus of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, at the Greater Port Harcourt City.
Performing the ceremony, Wednesday, at the university’s new site within the new Greater Port Harcourt City, Governor Amaechi said the construction would commence with the building of hostels which are to be used to accommodate officials and participants in the forth-coming 17th National Sports Festival to be hosted by the state in October, this year”.
The governor who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on the Development of the New State University of Science and Technology, Mrs Vivien Braide, explained that the state was expected to host about 15,000 athletes, coaches and officials.
The state chief executive remarked that the ceremony was significant, and expressed the hope that “despite the peculiar challenges of our environment, the construction of the hostels would be completed before the commencement of the games.
Governor Amaechi lauded the firm handling the construction work at the new university, for the readiness it had shown to deliver the project according to specification.
In his remarks, the Dean, Students Affairs, RSUST, Prof Kelvin Bob-Manuel, described the ground-breaking ceremony as memorable and commended Governor Amaechi for the good work he is doing for the university and people of the state.
Also speaking, the Deputy Managing Director, Zerock, Mr Mavoun Kassouf, said his company was glad to be part of what he described “as a big project” and gave the assurance that the hotels would be delivered on schedule.
Speaking in an interview with Government House correspondents shortly after the ceremony, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on the new UST development, Mrs Vivien Braide stated that the new university would be a world class university, adding that as soon as the hotels were completed and the sports festival concluded, the development would move into phase two.
According to her, the phase two involves building of the faculties, accommodation for the Deans and the Vice Chancellor as well as administrative block and the library.
Mrs Braide said the major challenge faced last year in executing the project was the rains because the project was approved during the peak of the rainy season, promising that the dry season would be utilised optimally to ensure the delivery of the new university before the end of the present administration.
