Police Nab Man, 22 For Attempting To Kill Mum
A 22-year-old man, Nnamdi Mokwunye, has been arrested by policemen attached to Ilemba Hausa Division of the Lagos State Command for allegedly attempting to kill his mother.
Mokwunye reportedly visited her mother, Mrs. Abigael Nwajei, in her residence at Ajangbadi, a suburb of Lagos, on December 30, 2009 and confronted her with claims that she was responsible for the misfortunes of her seven children.
In the course of the heated argument that ensued, he allegedly sliced her 50-year-old mother’s throat with a sharp knife and hit her on the head with a hammer, knocking off about four teeth in the process.
The suspect, a 2006/2007 Accountancy graduate of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, quickly fled the scene, leaving the woman in the pool of her own blood unconscious.
The woman was later revived at a nearby hospital where she was rushed to by neighbours and policemen.
The statement she made to the police when her condition became a bit stable later led to the suspect’s arrest.
In an interview with journalists at the premises of the police command’s Public Relations Office, Mokwunye said he approached his mother for a “mother and son talk” following numerous revelations in his church (name withheld) that the woman was responsible for his misfortune.
He said, “I did not plan to kill her. I went to her house to talk to her and let her see reasons why she should release us (her children) from her evil bondage especially as we enter the New Year.
“But she started shouting. She picked a pair of scissors on the table and shook me in the hand. I picked a knife on the table with the aim of scaring her off.
“She took a hammer, I snatched the hammer from her and used it on her.
