FG Assures On Enhanced Pay For Poly, COE
The federal government has promised to resolve the demand for pay rise by unions in Polytechnics and Colleges of Education sub-sector without discrimination.
Minister of Education, Dr Sam Egwu, who stated this in Abuja at a meeting with unions in Polytechnics and Colleges of Education negotiating team’s assigned that the principles used in fixing the new pay package for university union would be followed.
He explained that the national salaries, income and Wages commission has been directed to produce the new salary table for staff in the two sectors within the shortest possible time to allow for signing of an agreement to that effect.
Dr Egwu lauded maturity disposition of staff of the institutions for heeding government’s appeal on the issues which led to peaceful atmosphere in the sector while the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike lasted.
According to him, government has maintained its earlier promise that the outcome of negotiation with ASUU would be extended to the sector pointing out that it is not only, by confrontation that Union could negotiate to get things for their members.
The minister enjoined National Salary and Wages Commission to handle the assignment with the serious it deserves noting that, the union’s cooperation was not a mark of weakness.
National President of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, Mohammed Ibrahim said the impeccable disposition of the minister of education to fairness manifested many times throughout the meeting sustained the confidence of his members.
He urged Dr Egwu to monitor the process of the new salary table to ensure that the fiscal out come is a true reflection of what has been generally agreed to.
