About N1.1 trillion is to be expended by the three tiers of government in Nigeria for the implementation of the National Programme of Action (NPOA) for the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).
A breakdown of the figure shows that Federal Government will spend N522.3 million while each state of the federation and each government area will spend N10 billion and N251.2 million respectively.
The Assistant Director programmes APRM, Mrs Maria Ngozi disclosed this in her paper entitled, “implementation of African Peer Review Mechanism, National Programme of Action; concept update, structure and Budgeting” a workshop on mainstreaming the APRM National programme of action in Port Harcourt.
Mrs Ngozi said that, the NPOA is conceived as a strategy for implementing series of projects and programmes targeted at achieving good governance.
According to her, the concept is an attempt to link analytical study of Nigeria’s governance and development challenges.
Declaring the workshop open, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Magnus Abe, said that the New Partnership for Africa Development (NEPAD) holds the key to the development of the state.
Mr Abe who assured the agency of the State government’s support, however stressed the need for collaboration with other agencies to avoid duplication.
In his speech, the special adviser to the Governor on NEPAD, Dr Tex Wariboko said that the agency has the mandate of checking poverty in the state.
He said that the agency has listed agriculture, transportation and tourism as its poverty areas.
