Foundation To Build Lodges For NYSC
Moved to ensure that National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme sustains its focus, the NYSC Foundation, a private sector initiative plans to construct corpers lodges across the country.
The Foundation, which is the brain-child of ex-corps members disclosed that the initiative is aimed at putting an end to the recent attacks on corps members especially in some locations in the country.
Mr. Remi Olowude, Chairman of the board of the foundation who stated this while briefing newsmen on the activities of the Foundation in Abuja, Wednesday, said the construction of the lodges would commence in Jos, Plateau State capital soon.
He also stated that the second phase would start in Asaba in Delta state in early 2010.
The Chairman of the Foundation strongly condemned the attack on Corps members arguing that a situation whereby Corps members do not have permanent accommodations in the state where they serve has contributed immensely to their vulnerability to attack from ignorant locals.
He was of the view that if the corps members are provided with residence where they can all stay together would insulate them against evil-minded individuals.
It would be recalled that the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier-General Maharazu Tsiga, had last week, expressed fears that the scheme may soon lose its focus if the challenges facing it were not addressed.
