Anambra Guber Race INEC Raises Monitoring, Supervision Team
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has set up an election monitoring and supervision board for the 2010 Anambra Governorship election.
The 10 member board is made up of entirely independent Nigerians from various walks of life.
Chairman of INEC, Prof Maurice Iwu said the commission has in the last four years instituted various reforms to change the electoral process, but some political interest groups have been doing all they can to undermine all efforts to change the system.
Prof. Iwu said the Anambra State advance initiative election provides an opportunity to transparent process.
The commission noted that it has decided to establish such a board in view of the experience of the recent past and the apparent wilful destruction of the best intention and other actions of the commission by the groups.
The commission’s term of reference include to monitor the preparations, organisations and conduct of the Anambra Gubernatorial election in February, 2010.
To consider and point out any factor that may affect the conduct and credibility of the electoral process, to determine if the result of the election reflects the wishes of the people, and to submit each reports to the chairman of the commission at the end of the election and publish same for public consumption, Prof. Iwu added.
The chairman of the board who is also the first Vice National president of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Ikeazor Akariwe said the members of the board are determined to ensure success of the affairs and conduct of the election.
