Rivers State Government has said that the essence of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was for National Unity and Integration as well as even distribution of manpower across the country.
The State Governor, Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Ameachi made the remark during the opening and swearing-in- of 2009 Batch ‘C’ corps members at Nonwa-Gbam in Tai Local Government Area.
The Governor who was represented by the Commissioner of Information, Mrs Ibim Semenitari reminded the corps members that the service scheme was established as a vehicle for mobilising youths towards National orientation and development.
The governor recalled the roles played by the founding fathers of the NYSC in their fight against illiteracy and spread of HIV/AIDs and urged members to resist any temptation to deviate from the standards.
He reminded them that the orientation course was designed to prepare them for the task of serving their fatherland which he said should be done diligently as they pass the training to others.
The governor charged the NYSC members to shun cultism and all forms of anti social behaviour in order to be responsible and disciplined citizens of Nigeria and also warned them against any dealing with disgruntled and unpatriotic individuals who would want to use them for selfish purposes.
