The Chief Coach of Rivers State Karate Association, Kingsley Ewelie, popularly known as “Grand master” has assured the people of the state that his association would make the state proud by clinching majority of the gold medals in the Karate event at next year’s National Sports Festival.
Ewelie gave the assurance, in an exclusive interview with The Tidesports shortly after his return with his boys from Kaduna where they had competed in a junior Karate Championship, saying that the impressive performances displayed by his team in the tournament has given him the confidence that the association would do well in the sports festival.
“I am surprised that my team won six of the eight fights in the competition, That means the association is ready for the gains”, he said.
According to him, the boys who won their fights at Kaduna will represent the country, in an international junior Karate tournament to be hosted in Abuja, Nigeria in January.
“My dream is to ensure that this association is the best in Nigeria and beyond. For nine years I have been sponsoring the association with my personal money, because of the love I have for the sports’, he said.
The karate chief coach used the forum to appeal to corporate organisations in the state to come into sponsoring of sporting activities, “because sports development is a collective thing, only government can not do everything about sports.”
