In his determination and efforts to defray the backlog of salary arrears owned workers in Abia State particularly teachers Gov. Theodore Orji has sacrificed his September Security vote, while his deputy, Comrade Chris Akomas received only half even as the offices of the governor and his deputy were said to have been starved of their subventions for the past six months.
Deputy Chief of Staff, Chief Charles Ogbonnaya who dropped the hints in an interview with newsmen in Umuahia said that paucity of funds occasioned by the global economic meltdown has reviewed a major setback in the governor’s bid to deliver more democracy dividend to the citizenry.
“Last month, the state found it difficult to pay salaries and that culminated to the fact that the governor sacrificed his security vote and the deputy received half of his security vote and I know we are owing teachers about N700 million and he just sacrificed his security vote to enable government pay them part of the debt.”
Mr Ogbonnaya expressed surprise that critics of the government still compare Abia with other states in Niger Delta region with greater federal allocations and argued that much cannot be expected of a state with lean resources.
On the rumour in certain quarters that governor might be considering his deputy as successor in 2015, the deputy governor said he would not be surprised considering the cordial relationship that had existed between the due, and more so that it would be turn of Abia south, the deputy governor’s kinsmen to produce the next state’s chief executive.
“When a servant serves his master well his master hands his property to him. I know he is a very loyal deputy governor who has played his complementary role well, so I will not be surprised.”
He accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led federal government of neglecting the South East region as no tangible project according to him can be identified in the region contrary to the administration since the 10 years of the present democratic dispensation.
Ogbonnaya also carpeted Igbo political elites for sacrificing the collective interest of the race on the alter of their personal aggrandizements and called for a change of attitude if the Igbo nation will have a slot in the Nigerian Political equations.
He therefore enjoined Igbo political leaders to join forces and project the Igbo course through a united political party like the Yorubas for the race instead of blackmails and political vendetta against one another as currently obtains.
“Not until we begin to think like the Yorubas who believes whether you are winning or losing, you have your own political party that is solely thinking about the development of your own ethnic group. Buhari, Atiku and Bafarawa house formed a mega party. Tell me one Igbo man that has contributed in the formation of that party but you wills see their errand boys tomorrow coming to distabilise what we have built in Igbo land.”
“When we had our own party Okpara was able to develop every party of Eastern Nigeria. But today, because you have political harlots and bootlikers who only go after their own interest everything is scattered.”
