Imo Plans Return Of 35 Schools To Missionaries

No former than 35 schools spread in three geo-political area of the 27 local councils in Imo State have been penciled down by the state government for possible takeover by the missionaries and voluntary agencies, the commissioner for Education, Prof. Jude Njoku, has discharged.

Speaking while inaugurating the committee to facilitate the takeover last week in Owerri, the former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri FUTO, explained to the committee that a week has been given to them to fashion out the takeover in view of the urgency the state government placed on it based on the yearings of the people.

The Commissioner disclosed that 17 schools in Owerri zone eight in Okigiwe and 10 in Orlu zone had been ear marked for takeover adding that Imo State government would pay the salaries of the staff for the first two years. He also said that the teacher of the affected schools are free to transfer to public schools.

The Committee handed by Prof. B. Nwoke has been urged to locate more schools that could qualify for such takeover.

One of the committee members Dr. Anothony Obinna in a reaction said that they had been accusing for the takeover because it would being about sanity in the school system.

He said  “we are asking for the return of our schools an a way of ensuring effective rebranding when schools are returned to the rightful owners.”
