The Local Organising Committee for the hosting of the 17th National Sports Festival, otherwise called “Garden City Games 2010”, has finally selected the best mascot design for the fiesta.

The mascot design, symbolising the Dolpin, was produced by Mr. Dawari-Kalio Tam, the designer of the festival logo, both of which would be forwarded to the National Sports Commission for approval.

Addressing newsmen shortly after a meeting presided over by the state Deputy governor and Chairman of the Committee, Engr. Tele Ikuru, the State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Boma Iyaye said the festival logo and mascot were chosen after various designers submitted their entries.

According to Iyaye, who is also the vice chairman of the committee, the mascot design depicted the Rivers culture, pointing out that dolphin is found in our rivers.

The sports commissioner noted that as part of arrangements for the successful hosting of the festival by the state, a list of jobs were published in The Tide Newspaper just as the process of engaging people are on-going.

“The sports ministry had earlier published the list of jobs to enable us host the festival and the exercise is undergoing due process”, he stressed, adding that after completion, the jobs would be awarded.

He explained that the committee opted for dolphin instead of any other fish or creature because of its friendly character, as Rivers State is noted for its hospitality and friendliness to visitors.

“We will launch the mascot sometime in December, 2009 after the approval of the National Sports Commission”, a statement said.
