Hosts Zimbabwe are through to the final of Southern Africa’s Cosafa Senior Challenge after defeating South Africa in a penalty shoot-out on Wednesday.

The Warriors won the game in Harare 3-2 on penalties after the match had ended 1-1.

Zimbabwe will contest Sunday’s final against Zambia or Mozambique, who played their semi final game in Bulawayo yesterday.

South Africa went ahead on 38 minutes when Lennox Bacela scored from close range after running in from a free-kick with the Warriors defence standing still.

Zimbabwe launched attack after attack in a pulsating second half, but South Africa almost doubled their lead on 53 minutes, with Edmore Sibanda making a great save from George Lebese.

A minute later the Warriors equalised when striker Phillip Marufu stabbed home after some poor defending.

In the shoot-out South Africa missed their first two penalties and Keamohetse Wolff blasted their final kick over the bar to give Zimbabwe victory.

The crowd of 25,000 celebrated as the Warriors will be back for the final on Sunday.

South Africa were fielding a developmental side of young locally-based players.
