Students Population Hits 30,000 At RSUST

About 29,939 students have now been confirmed as bonafide students of the state owned Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt.

The figures were made public by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Barineme Fakae while delivering a paper on National Security: Challenges in Educational Sector” at the University of Nigeria Alumni Association  Founders Day organised by the Rivers State branch in Port Harcourt, Wednesday.

Prof Fakae said the figures were confirmed following the introduction of electronic registration by the university authorities early this year.

The Vice Chancellor said with the new figure, it is now possible to adequately plan and revamp the university recalling that prior to his administration, it was difficult to obtain adequate difficult to obtain adequate students data.

Prof Fakae identified inadequate funding, lack of manpower, absence of accurate data, lack of excellence and policy inconsistencies as impediments to education development in the country.

In his opinion, corruption in the nation’s ivory towers has fostered the growth of cultism, including admission racketeering and exams fraud which has now become part and parcel of higher education.

Listing his achievement so far in revamping the university, Prof Fakae stated that the introduction of electronic admission and registration have made it possible for the law students of the institution to get their full results 10 years after.

In his speech former Deputy Governor of Rivers State and three time alumni chairman of the body, Sir Gabriel Toby urged members to rekindle their interest in moving the association forward.

Sir Toby reminisced that UNN was known for excellence and hardwork and therefore tasked members of the university alumni association to ensure that such value are maintained always.

Earlier, chairman of the branch, Ben Okoronkwo in his remarks recalled that the university founding father, Late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe had envisioned the school to be the best in the country.
