RSUST Students Protest Maladmin. It Was Sponsored –Fakae
Student of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt have embarked on a peaceful demonstration accusing the university authority of high handedness.
The students who marched round the campus of the university yesterday also accused the university authority of maladministration.
The students contended that despite the claim by management that services at the institution’s Information and Communication and Technology (ICT) Centre were free, they are actually paying huge amount of money and sometimes bribed some of the officials to get services at the centre.
They also complained of non resumption of academic activities since the suspension of ASUU strike and blamed the situation on the management.
In his reaction, through the phone, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof B.B Fakae alleged that the students were being sponsored by some individuals to destablise the institution.
Prof Fakae said that the issues raised by the protesters could have been handled by the Senate, if they had been brought to its attention, stressing that demonstration was not the best way for students to register their grievances.
He also said that the fees being charged by Micro soft at the ICT centre were inline with international practice, the world over, stressed that the purpose of establishing the centre was to enable the students acquire internationally recognized certificates that could fetch them employment anywhere in the world.
On the issue of payment of staff salaries, he said the management has already written to the accountant-general instructing him to pay staff.
