The authorities of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt yesterday announced the indefinite closure of the university.

The move followed the continuous demonstration by students of the institution calling for the removal of the Vice  Chancellor, Prof B.B.Fakae. The situation  led to the barricading of the two gates leading to the university campus by anti-riot policemen.

Some of the students who spoke to newsmen accused the vice chancellor of impoverishing them.

They particularly accused him of worsening their living condition through the introduction of a bench fee, something that is unheard of in any university in the country, while further accusing the vice chancellor of making it difficult for them to obtain free services at the institution’s ICT centres, contrary to his claim.

Other accusations include, non mobilization of students for the  National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, amongst others.

In a statement signed by the acting registrar, Mrs D.C Odimabo, the  students were directed to park out of their hostels immediately. It also said that normal academic activities would resume as soon as the situation normalizes.
