Ghana President, John Mills has announced that there will be no public holiday today in the country to celebrate the historic triumph of the nation’s team at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt. Ghana’s Black Satellites beat Brazil 4-3 on penalties after a goalless match to become the first African team to win the FIFA Under-20 World Cup. As is often the tradition when an African team record a major international victory, it was thought that the government would declare a work-free day to celebrate such a feat. However, President Mills, who is an avid football fan, has disclosed that there will be no such holiday, though he did promise to reward the team for their momentous victory in Cairo. “We’re not going to declare Monday (today) a holiday,” President Mills, who watched the final live on television, told Tidesports source. “I think that we should go to work and then show people that with hard work and determination, we can move this country forward in the right direction. “We want everybody to spend their time profitably. So we’ll go to work on Monday but we will give praise to these boys, give praise to the technical handlers, give praise to the Ghana FA and, above all, give praise to God.” Mills added, “The boys need to be congratulated and commended on their wonderful performance. In the face of adversity Ghanians will rise up to the challenge”.
