Kutiyi Advises Judiciary On Fairness In Justice Dispensation
Courts in Nigeria have been advised to build a beneficial cooperation with other jurisdictions in both civil and criminal matters for the realisation of judiciary’s vision of dispensation of justice to all with fairness.
Giving the advice Thursday in a keynote address on the occasion of the official commissioning of the Enugu Division of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Idris L. Kutigi , stressed the need for Nigerian Courts to work in closer relationship with others to avail themselves of knowledge arising from experiences gained in handling matters of commerce, industrial and labour relations.
His words: “We need to work hard to strengthen, renew and create new practice and procedure of management of justice. We also need to incorporate relevant technology in the operations of case flow management and general administration. You must in the discharge of your noble duties as judges conduct yourselves in a manner consistent with your oath of office and code of conduct. Approach your task with the dignity and importance which the office demands. Be courteous but firm in the discharge of your duties . Above all, you should always approach your work with the fear of Allah to whom we shall be accountable in the hereafter”, he further reasoned.
Hon. Justice Kutigi also considers it very imperative that certain salient issues especially on the jurisdiction of some courts in the country be resolved now as the nation takes the bold step in the review of its constitution.
According to him, “when the constitutional bottlenecks [conflict of jurisdiction] confronting the court are removed , more cases will be filed before the court”, adding that the integration of appropriate court technology to facilitate the operations of the court , especially verbatim recording and transcription of proceedings are also part of the remarkable repositioning taking place in the court.”
