Imo Women To Benefit From Empowerment Project

The wife of Imo State Governor, Barrister Chioma Ohakim has said that her pet project, Empowerment for Women and Youth Initiative (EWYI) was aimed at ensuring that women and youths are self reliance Imo State and the nation at large.

Bar Ohakim who stated this in an interview with news men at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, last week also noted that the programme was designed to improve the living standard of rural women and youths in Imo State, instead of them engaging in petty trading.

The Governor’s wife revealed that her research in Imo State showed that women in the state needed encouragement and financial assistance stressing that the overall objective of the pet project is not only to improve the living standard and developing the rural women but to always put food on their table at all times. 

According to her, some of the women are taught how to sew clothes, some on how to make hair and hair dressing stating that after their learning period, machine and equipment would be distributed to them to enable them set up their business and develop from there.

She also noted that those in schools are given scholarships, while those who could not continue their education for financial reasons are assisted to continue their education.

The project which was officially commissioned by the wife of the president, Turai Yar’Adua last Wednesday, has been on since the inception of Ohakim’s administration in Imo State.

The N500 million project is being sponsored by Mrs Chioma Ohakim to help uplift and improve the living standard of women adding that the project is also helping the administration to sensitise and educate women on government policies.
