Group Mobilises 20 million N’Deltans For Post-Amnesty Deal
A programme tagged: Hope Across Niger Delta (HAND) is being put together by a group of people to consolidate the gains of the amnesty programme and the fulfillment of its commitment.
Speaking to newsmen at the inaugural meeting of the steering committee in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, the Co-ordinator of the HAND programme, Mr. Eyinimi Omorozi, said the programme is designed to mobolise 20 million Niger Deltans as critical masses to help stimulate post-amnesty confidence building for government and other stakeholders to ensure substainable peace and development of the area.
This, Mr. Omorozi said is an attempt to put an end to the era of pains and hopelessness arising from the incessant oil and non-oil related crises situations in the region as to ensure sustainable peace and development.
“HAND is a mass mobilisation of people to rekindle the hopes and aspirations of the people for a socially stable and economically prosperous Niger Delta,” Omorozi declared.
The Chairman of the HAND steering Committee, Comrade Wariebi Agamene, a one-time President of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers of Nigeria (NUPENG), emphasised that social economic and infrastructure development of the region is a collective responsibility.
To this end, Agamene said, Niger Deltans should embrace all forms of peace building and re-orientate themselves towards helping to ensure the growth and development of the region.
Chief Agamene, pointed out that, it would be a grave omission not to involve the 20 million Niger Deltans in the whole amnesty exercise.
He said HAND is designed to harness and engage the collective power of the very critical masses to mobilise, reach out, build bridges and cement the bonds of people throughout the region.
Throwing more light on the proposed activities of HAND, its media co-ordinator Mr. Asu Beks, said it is a conscious attempt to give Niger Deltans the voice and will to permanently bring violence to an end.
He said the programme train is slated to start from 4 to12 December across all the states of the region, while the peace torch rally, peace and development rally in each state, live musical concerts, live TV panel discussion will also follow. The rally torch will be flagged off by the President, Beks also revealed.
