Ahead of the festivity period characterised by high crime rate, the FCT Minister, Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero has restated the commitment of his administration together with other governors to fight crime to a standstill.
Senator Aliero said this on Thursday at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja during the fourth session of the G6 Security Initiative comprising Governors of Niger, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi and the FCT.
The Security Summit is part of efforts to fashion out ways that would flush out criminals from the zone.
The Minister reiterated that the Police and security agents in the zone would be empowered to beat criminals in the game thereby making the entire zone unattractive for their nefarious activities.
Senator Aliero remarked that the report by his Security Adviser has highlighted vulnerable points within the G6 and the nature as well as frequency of the crimes associated with those points call for our immediate action.
His words: “We must take urgent steps to reverse the trend especially as this season is historically associated with high crime rate. As criminals warm up to the ‘ember months’, their activities would be nipped in the bud”.
The Minister restated that the G6 Security Initiative is holistic as it is not restricted to the synergising of Police Operations but extends to the sharing of ideas, intelligence reports and critical information among security apparatus in the region including the Armed Forces, State Security Service, NDLEA, Federal Road Safety Commission, State VIOs, Attorneys General and Commissioners of Justice as well as the Attorney General of the Federation/Minister of Justice.
While paying tribute to the founders of the G6, Senator Aliero called on member states to lend the initiative the needed political will and financial support to return the G6 to that glorious 2007 status.
“Crime prevention is a very big challenge. We need to work together to address it and empower our security agencies to be able to work at their best. Collective action is known to be more effective than each one of us acting alone”, he stressed.
