Air travellers to Enugu during the coming Christmas festivities may face hard times as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has planned to shut down the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu for repair work on the runway.
The Tide gathered that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had written to the Presidency for approval to shut down the airport for flight operations to resurface the entire runway which has been overdue.
Sources also hinted The Tide that the runway which is below three kilometers may not be extended which means large body aircraft cannot still land at the airport because of its short runway.
Authoritative sources informed The Tide that airlines would be notified about the planned closure in due course and the plan is that flight operations will be diverted to Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, Owerri.
Apart from flights operation diversions, staff of FAAN may also be sent to Owerri to help Owerri staff handle the operations since there is an indication of increase in flight operation and other services.
Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport has become an alternative airport. In 2006 when Port Harcourt international Airport was shutdown for repairs, the Owerri airport served as an alternative, now it is also going to serve the same purpose, as the Federal Government planned to close the airport.
