Chief Commits Suicide

A prominent chief in Rumuosi in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State is said to have committed suicide, last Friday night.

The deceased, Chief Hycent Abu Chukwunda it was reliably gathered took his life in his family house for undisclosed reasons after he had dinner prepared by his wife on Thursday night and retired to sleep.

A source at the community stated that the deceased, a retiree of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) locked himself in his room and tied a george cloth to the ceiling with which he allegedly hanged himself.

Members of his family became apprehensive when they did not see him the next day and decided to call his phone which rang in his room without answer. It was at that point they broke into his room and found his lifeless body dangling on the ceiling with a side stool which he was suspected to have used to hang himself.

Meanwhile, the corpse has been deposited in a mortuary while efforts are being made by traditional spiritualists to appease the land following the circumstance of the death considered a taboo in the Akpor culture.

The incident has been reported to the Choba Police Station which is now investigating the matter.
