Anambra Police Foil Kidnap Attempt

In what appears to be a welcome development in Anambra, the police and other security agencies have braced up to the challenges posed by armed robbers.

A few days after those that attempted to kidnap the Chairman of Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council and the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe were captured, another set of kidnappers have been captured at Okpuno, Awka, while attempting to kidnap Barr. Ozoemena   Onyali (SAN) as he made his way to the Okpuno Retreat Centre for morning mass.

The kidnappers who probably knew he attended mass every morning waited for him as he was driven in his Mercedes Benz Car. When they stopped him while he was at the point of entering the Centre, he was said to have locked his car. As the kidnapper used the butt of their guns to break the windows, security men swooped on them. During exchange of fire, one of the kidnappers was killed and one captured, while others ran into the bush.

As at press time, security agencies had cordoned the bush they ran into and are searching the place.

Meanwhile, through the cooperation of the arrested  kidnapper, the person that supplied them with ammunition had already been arrested.

Speaking on the incidence, E. Obinna Dike, one of the priests at the retreat centre said he was actually celebrating mass at the Centre when heavy shooting took place. He said that Barr. Ozoemena Onyali (SAN) who never attended morning masses late was not in the Church at that time, but the congregation naturally taught about him.
