Multinational oil companies operating in the Niger Delta have been told to support current efforts of the federal government to end the crisis in the region by offering employment opportunities to repentant militants.
The Senior Special Adviser to President Yar’Adua on Niger Delta Affair, Mr Timi Alaibe who made the call while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt said the oil companies could support current efforts by the government by providing logistics.
Mr Alaibe observed that inputs such as training, employment and empowerment of the ex-militants would reduce unemployment and restiveness among youths in the region to a barest minimum.
He pointed out that the federal government alone would not shoulder every responsibility to address issues of the region.
According to him, the oil companies could employ some repentant militants that want employment, train those that need to acquire skills and also provide logistics for their empowerment, the federal government cannot do it alone”, he noted.
Mr Alaibe used the opportunity to appeal to those who were offended in any way by the activities of the militants to forgive and accept them back to the society.
“Let us accept them back to the society, let us forgive them and receive them so that they can change their lives for better, as we should help them to re-integrate into the society”, adding, that we should not use violence to win violence.
