The Rivers State Ministry of Works yesterday started patching of roads with very worrisome pot-holes in Port Harcourt.

The interventionist measure according to Works Ministry sources is to make the six designated worse case areas motorable pending construction work after the rains.

Works Commissioner, Hon Dakuku Peterside, who flagged off the campaign at the Iwofe axis of Ada-George road in Port Harcourt said that contracts for the construction of the roads have already been awarded.

The campaign which is code-named ‘Zero-Tolerance to Pot-holes’ will gulp N500m in the first instance, adding that a total of N1bn had been earmarked for the  interventionist measure.

Hon Peterside identified, East/West, Eliozu, Waterlines, Trans-Amadi roads as those with the worst disturbing pot-holes and assured that every thing humanly possible would be done to make them motorable pending the take-off of the suspended construction work after the rains.

He explained that the  work would not include tarring since, according to him, that is already provided for in the contractual agreement with the various contractors engaged by government.

The commissioner called for understanding and cooperation of motorists and other road users explaining that their patience with the on-going work would be key to early completion of the projects.

He said the campaign would last for only 14 days during which period he assured that the worst hit area would be made safe and motorable, describing most of the roads under repair as federal government roads.
