PCN Moves To Strengthen Drug Distribution System

As part of effort to minimise the circulation of fake and adulterated pharmaceutical products in the country, the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) has mapped out strategies to strengthen the drug distribution system in the country.

The Council Registrar, Dr. Ahmed Mora, who stated this during a two-day workshop for Superintendent and Production Pharmacists of Manufacturing Industries in Nigeria said the move became necessary because the distribution of pharmaceutical drugs was central to the health care system.

Dr. Mora stated that in addition to the distribution of pharmaceutical drugs  there were also lapses in the current distribution of drugs caused by the manufacturers.

According to him, every pharmaceutical outlet is expected to have at least two pharmacists, a superintendent and a production pharmacist, adding that most pharmaceutical outlets had failed to adhere to the breakdown in the pharmaceutical distribution of drugs.

He explained that if there is no breakdown, the health care system will suffer because the drugs needed will not get to those that need them.

“The PCN is intensifying efforts to ensure efficiency in the distribution of drugs by manufacturers in conformity with the laid down principles of the PCN on the setting up of pharmaceutical outlets.

Dr. Mora warned that premises of pharmaceutical outlets that failed to conform to such laid down principles would be sealed.

“We want collaborations from the pharmaceutical companies because with that they will know what is expected of them”, he said.
