Abia Sets December Deadline To Eradicate Kidnapping
Abia State government has set December this year as deadline for the state’s Anti-kidnapping Squad to eradicate kidnapping.
Also, the Rector of Abia State Polytechnic, Elder Allwell Onukaogu, has advocated proper equipping of the Police for their crime bursting mission to enable them confront the superior armed robbers.
At the general meeting of the Abia state chapter of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) held at the Police Officers’ Mess in Umuahia, Orji explained that he set the December deadline to give safe passage to and peaceful stay for Abians in diaspora who wish to come home and spend the yuletide with their loved ones.
Orji stressed that the role of PCRC has become more crucial given the spiraling crime wave in the society and urged the group to embark on the sensitization of the populace on the crime prevention activities of the Police as well as the need to provide vital information to the security outfit.
The governor, represented by his Special Duties Commissioner, Victor Ubani, said he was impressed by the focus and doggedness of the Police in the state despite the killing of their members which should have demoralized them.
Onukaogu who bagged a merit award for his security consciousness and assistance to security agencies in his immediate environment, the Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, said it has become imperative that Policemen should be better equipped with superior arms while their welfare is improved to motivate them to fight the criminals.
“It is not fair to give the Police the level of support or assistance at the level they were being given those days when the vogue was Bolt Action Rifle what is called Mark Four. Today, the criminal are armed with sophisticated rifles and their firepower is so high;” he remarked.
The Rector said that the Police should be given AK 47 with at least, three magazines to enable them face the criminals who he said also fear for their lives.
He commended the government for providing armoured personnel carriers for crime fighting in Abia but pleaded that more be provided, stressing that no development would take place without security.
He advised Policemen on road patrol to focus more on thorough search of vehicles rather than examining particulars.
Abia State Commissioner of Police, Edgar Tam Nanakumo, represented by Ademola Omole (ACP), assured that with the new crime fighting strategies in place, Abians could go to sleep with their eyes closed and thanked the governor and the PCRC for their assistance.
Chairman of Abia PCRC, Chief Ugochukwu Obi, commended the Police and Abia State government for their efforts to contain crime in the state, promising that his group would not relent in assisting the Police to discharge their functions effectively.
Obi said Abia PCRC was in dire need of mobility to carry out its responsibilities.
Assistant Inspectior-General of Police in charge of Zone 9, Olusegun Efuntayo, was represented at the meeting by James Ogbonna (DCP).
