RSG Raises Committee On Multiple Taxation
In its determined effort to rescue motorists, the business community and residents in general from multiple taxation in the state, the state Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has set up a Committee for the Harmonization of Taxes and Levies.
A statement from the office of the Acting Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Blessing Wikina, said the setting up of the 12-man committee, which is to be headed by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ken Chikere, was aimed at reducing incidences of harassment on the road by government agents.
The statement added that to strengthen the capacity and resolutions of the committee, the Commissioners for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Transport, Urban Development, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs as well as Environment are to serve as statutory members of the committee.
Other members are the state ALGON Chairman, Special Adviser to the Governor on Revenue, one Local Government Chairman, and a representative of the Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture (PHCCIMA) while the chairman of the State Internal Revenue Board is to serve as secretary.
The statement, added that the decision of government to promote qualitative and widespread representation on the committee is to ensure that a unique taxation system is evolved in the state.
The committee, the statement noted, would be inaugurated at a later date.
