NIREC Lists Benefits Of Amnesty To Militants
The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) has said that the amnesty offer to militants in the Niger Delta by the federal government has provided an opening for the return of lasting peace to the troubled region.
In a communique made available to newsmen at the end of its third quarter general meeting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, NIREC also described as worrisome the incessant cases of kidnapping in the region.
NIREC, which condemned the recent Boko Haram crisis in parts of the country also urged the government to consider all those who kill in the name of religious as common criminals.
It also urged the government to promote good governance in the country, while parents should be alive to their responsibilities.
The communiqué, which was read by the National Coordinator, NIREC, Prof ls-haq Oloyede, also called on the law enforcement agencies to be alive to their responsibilities while moral and religious education be made compulsory in schools.
It also warned religious leaders to be mindful of their utterances and urged international orgainsations to give the necessary support to NIREC to enable it function effectively.
The communique also commended the Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi, for the successful hosting of the meeting in the state.
