Mrs Amaechi Laments Youths’ Future …As The World Marks Youths’ Day
Wife of the Rivers State Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi has warned that a looming danger awaits the nation if the falling standard of education and unemployment facing the youths are not properly addressed.
In a message to mark the 2009 United Nations International Youth day, Mrs Amaechi said the nation’s quest for the actualisation of the millennium development goals MDGs and the vision to become one of the 20 strong economies of the world in 2020 may be a mirage if the youths are not adequately prepared and equipped to complement and interpret governmental policy and vision.
She lamented that the continuous closure of developmental institutions and human capacity building institutions like the universities barely six years to the attainment of the MDGs is a signal to the looming crisis if it is not properly handled.
The governor’s wife while commenting on the theme for the 2009 celebration: Niger Delta must be prepared to be at par with their contemporaries within the global village, if they must be relevant in the global system.
Mrs Amaechi described the youths as the future of the country whose fortune depends on their acceptance of the challenges of societal expectation in the 21st century. According to her, “the place of youths participation and consideration in fundamental issues of the environment, governance, the economy as well as the society are the key to developing a sustainable Nigerian state.”
She enjoined the youths to embrace the challenges of the time and indulge in an activity capable of discovering their potentials with a view to contributing to the socio-economic and political development of the economy.
The United Nations International Youths day endorsed in 1999 is aimed at appreciating the significance of the youths and adopting their social responsibility to the development of the society.
