Community Erupts In Violence, Indigenes Flee

No fewer than 120 indigenes of Nkerehi in Orumba South Local Government  Area of Anambra State have fled the area following a crisis which erupted in the area.

The Tide learnt that some youths of the community were trying to impose the now name of the community, Umuchukwu and others. But sources said most of the indigenes insisted on the former name, Nkerehi. The state government gazetted the name when it was changed.

Some youths, who apparently preferred the new name stormed the area behieved to be the territory of those insisting on Nkerehi and set about five houses ablazed.

As a result, people have fled their homes, seeking refuge in neighbouring communities like Owerre Ezukala, Ogbuka and Umunze.

About 50 elderly persons took refuge at Saint Paul’s Anglican Church for fear of being attacked.

The Tide gathered that the priest in charge of the church, Rev. Solomon Obi, was attacked by youths who stormed the  Church. The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Emeka Chukwuemeka said that the police are investigating the crisis.

He said the law would deal with anyone found to have encouraged the crisis.
