The Rivers State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Commission in the 19 local government areas of the state where commercial motorcyclists ‘okada” business is still operational have been told to work in concert with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) ‘okada’ branch to realise government set objectives.
The Transport Commissioner, Mr. George Tolofari made the call recently while meeting with the leaders of ‘okada’ branch of the NURTW, and urged them to use reflective vests, crash helmet and ID cards for commercial okada riders.
The commissioner who described the situation in the rural areas where an “okada” rider could carry as many as five passengers at a time as unacceptable by the laws regulating their operations, added that law enforcement agents would ensure that precious lives are not wasted for no just cause.
Mr. Tolofari appealed to “okada” riders in the affected council areas to take advantage of the new kit to make their operations more acceptable to the government and not see it as a witch-hunt.
Earlier, the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Okada branch, Chief S.O. Chukwu, had said that they needed the assistance and cooperation of the various Divisional Police Officers and FRSC Units in the council areas where okada are operational.
